Congress Approves Bill to Release Jeffrey Epstein Documents

The Senate on Tuesday quickly approved to a measure that will force the release of investigative files related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the US House of Representatives and a reversal by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The White House changed course after months of trying to forestall the bipartisan effort involving a controversy that has dogged the president since his comeback to the White House.

Swift Passage in Both Chambers

Senators proceeded by consensus, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a formal roll call vote, speeding up the process. Earlier that day, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a 427-1 tally.

Citizens have waited long enough. The survivors have waited long enough,” the top Senate Democrat declared in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before requesting the chamber to adopt it by consent. “Reveal the truth. Let transparency reign.”

Next Steps

The bill next goes to Trump for his endorsement. He signaled on Monday that he would approve the bill.

Even though the president has for an extended period rejected the uproar over the government’s handling of the investigation as a “political stunt”, he voiced approval for the House bill over the past few days, and stated he would give his assent if it reaches his desk.

Reaction

Democrats, along with those affected and their supporters who were present in a viewing area, broke into applause after the bill was enacted. Lone dissent came from a GOP representative, who stated he feared the measure would disclose specific data of witnesses, potential suspects and others caught up in the investigation.
