Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
